Heal from Trauma, Anxiety, and Distressing Life Experiences

At WAVE Therapy, we understand that painful experiences can leave lasting emotional wounds. If you are struggling with trauma, anxiety, PTSD, low self esteem, or distressing memories, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy may help you find relief and healing.

EMDR is an evidence based psychotherapy approach designed to help the brain process and heal from traumatic or overwhelming experiences. Just as the body naturally works to heal physical injuries, the mind has the ability to heal from emotional pain when given the right support. EMDR helps “unstick” painful memories so they no longer feel as intense, overwhelming, or disruptive in daily life.

Our compassionate therapists provide EMDR therapy in person across San Diego and Southern California, as well as through secure virtual therapy sessions throughout California.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, research supported therapy that helps clients process distressing memories and reduce the emotional impact they have on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

During EMDR therapy, your therapist will guide you through a series of bilateral stimulation exercises, such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds, while helping you safely process difficult memories. This process helps the brain reprocess traumatic experiences in a healthier way, reducing emotional distress and creating new, more adaptive beliefs.

For example, someone who once believed, “I am powerless,” may begin to believe, “I am safe,” or “I am strong.”

What Can EMDR Help Treat?

EMDR therapy is effective for a wide range of mental health concerns, including:

Is EMDR Effective?

EMDR is one of the most researched trauma therapies available.

Research has shown:

  • 84% to 90% of individuals with a single traumatic event no longer met criteria for PTSD after only a few sessions
  • Studies have shown significant improvement in both single incident and complex trauma cases
  • EMDR is recognized as an effective trauma treatment by the American Psychiatric Association, World Health Organization, and the United States Department of Defense

EMDR can often help clients experience meaningful progress faster than traditional talk therapy alone.

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy is an eight phase treatment process designed to help you feel safe, supported, and in control throughout your healing journey.

Your therapist will help you:

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to talk in detail about every aspect of the trauma. Many clients appreciate that they can heal without reliving painful experiences extensively.
